God is not a Christian

Christianity cannot save us.  Only Christ.

Genesis 1:1   In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

So begins the Word, the Revelation, of God.

Some people think the Word of God is simply filled with a bunch of nice platitudes.  Some people think the Word of God is a Christian book.  Rather, the Word of God is the revelation, the revealing, the making known of God.

The Word of God can be used for many things…..when it is approached as a guide into a relationship with God, then it becomes a most powerful tool …… the means by which God brings us back to Himself.

God is not a Christian.  He wasn’t a Christian at the beginning, and He hasn’t become one since, though He dwells in a lot of Christians.  God doesn’t dwell in every single person who goes to a church building on Sunday.   God is not religious.  He never has been and He never will be.   God doesn’t want us to be religious.  No He doesn’t.  He wants us to know Him; know Him so that we can live as glorious beings.  That is what He wants.

God’s design for man has never been for us to formally worship Him in royal houses of ornate design and liturgy.   Rather, we have been designed to worship Him by the joyful expression of His Being, in the “church” of every day life.

God does what He pleases.  What God does is what pleases God.  What pleases God is anything He does.  Anything that gets in the way of God doing what He pleases, is not pleasing to God.  (see study What Pleases God)

God is good.  God is love.  God is light.  God is spirit.  God is faithful.  These things are always true of the true God.  These are traits revealed to us by God Himself.  What God does….everything God does…..is always done out in the open, and always has the purpose of benefitting man’s existence.

God needs nothing from you.  He is full and complete without you.  He does not need your obedience.  He does not need your faith.  He does not need your good will.  He does not need your good works.  God is no more God because you believe than He was less God before you believed.    God is and has all He needs.  God desires to share with you.   Of Himself.  Sharing and giving ……. pouring forth …….  is the nature of God.  He gives because He’s a giver.  He gives what He is.

You cannot make God angry with you.  You cannot disappoint God.  You cannot surprise God.  You can only receive from God what He has for you……or not.

Jesus Christ is the son of God.  God’s son.  He is born of, from, God.   God is his father.   God fathered him.   His life was and is the life of God, from conception in the womb of Mary.  Even Jesus, the Christ, was not a Christian.  He was of the Jewish faith.

Jesus was sent by God, his Father.  Jesus, being the perfectly obedient son, always did the will of God, his Father.   He always allowed what he spoke to be from his Father, what he did to be from his Father.  These truths are clearly stated in the Word of God, over and over.  They are simply stated, and easy to understand.  There is no darkness in these truths.  No blind faith.  No misconceptions that need to be cleared up.   No dark  “some things are not meant to be understood” doctrines of devils.

God raised Jesus, His son, from the dead.  He did this by giving him His life.  God made Jesus lord, or boss, over all creation mentioned in Genesis 1:1.  He did this in order to continue to do what He pleases, to have more children.  He can have more children, because His enemy, called Satan and the devil, was defeated by the death and just resurrection of Jesus, God’s son, now the boss over all creation.

As a son of God, there is a learning curve….for everyone except God.  Jesus had a learning curve.  I have a learning curve.  You, as a son of God, have a learning curve.  Being sinless; living your life without sin,  is not a part of that learning curve.  Only Jesus had to live sinless in order to please God.  We don’t.  You don’t.  Growing in a knowing of God is the learning curve.  Who He is.  How He works….with and in you.

Trying to not do what doesn’t work (sin) is so difficult, it is not the way we were created.  Learning to do what does work, that is the way God designed us, the way God designed life to be lived.  As we learn the ways that work, we stop doing what doesn’t work.  Simple.  Effective.  Rewarding.  Fruitful.

God is not a Christian.  If you have accepted the gift of the life of Jesus Christ …. of the life given to Jesus Christ by God ….. then God is now your Father, just like He is Jesus’ Father.  And what He has done and will do for Jesus, He will do for you and in you ….. forever.

God has made you a part of His church.  His church is where He lives the riches aspect of His being, where His ability to give is truly limitless.   If you put everyone who has ever or who ever will believe on Jesus Christ and be born of God’s spirit into a single group……THAT is God’s church.  It is a Christian (of Christ) church, because having the spirit of Christ is what makes you a part of it.

There are those born of the spirit of Christ in the world today, who are an integral part of God’s church,  who don’t go to any church building; some who do; some may be found in Buddhist temples, Moslem mosques, Mormon or Christian churches, out shopping, sitting at home watching TV.   There is no proper, prescribed fleshly behavior which gives you membership in the true church of God.  Rather, membership is by the spirit of Christ aloneonlysolely.

Only God, by means of the spirit of Jesus Christ which is given to you when you accept this gift of life from God, can teach you how to know Him, how He works with and in you.  In other words, only the spirit of God can make you more spiritual.  God knows that, the Word of God knows that.  The devil knows that.  If you don’t know that, if you think you can know God without being taught of God’s spirit, it’s because you’re listening to the wisdom of the devil.

The devil is the absence of God.  He is evil.  He is hate and despair, deception and lies….partial truth.  He is darkness.  He is spirit, but his wisdom deals only with feelings and the flesh…….saying that it’s the flesh (what’s happened, what might happen, how you’ve been treated, how you’ve behaved, etc.) which causes certain terrible feelings.  He is a liar.  People’s fleshly actions and behaviors (including your own) do not make you feel bad, aggressive, terrified, depressed, angry, etc.  The devil does.

Unless and until you are being taught and led by the spirit of Christ within, you can never be free from the lies and power of the devil, of the lies of darkness.  Even then, when you do have the spirit of God, and are taught and led by him; even then the old way of thinking will rear its ugly head and push you around.  But little by little, (seldom by leaps and bounds), as you seek and are taught by the holy spirit of God, Christ within, you will learn a new way of thinking, of relating, of living…..a new way of being!

The glorified Christ, established for all time at the right hand of the authority and power of God, is waiting to fulfill all the counsel and will of God, spoken of in Daniel and the gospels and the book of Revelation (among others).  Waiting to help bring this world to the place of final judgment and renewal; when the world will be finally rid of evil and lies and darkness once and for all time.  And we who put our trust in Christ, who are born of the same spirit he is born of, will be with him when he does this.  We will be like him, having all the same abilities and power he has,  when he does this.  In fact, he cannot do this without us.

We have an eternity to look forward to.  An everlasting life which in some ways is not that different from the life we live now……except no evil, no lies, no darkness, few limitations will blight this new life …. only love and light and power and joy and excitement forever.   An everlasting life of continual exploration and discovery and an abundance of experiences that are rich beyond all description.

No floating around on the clouds.  No harp playing.  Well, maybe some, if that’s what you want to do.

Revelation 22:21  The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.  Amen.

About stevehartlaub@gmail.com

I'm a 70 year old spiritual adventurer in life, but I don't really get along with organized religion. I find it too passive, too worldly, too conforming, too powerless ... though I know many wonderful believers involved in it. I have been a seeker of Jesus Christ since 1974 in Ketchikan, Alaska. Very early into my spiritual journey, I came to the realization that I wouldn't be able to last long in this new Godly relationship without becoming able to understand the Bible. God supplied that need, and shortly thereafter I became interested in Biblical research ... Greek, word studies, HOW the Bible is designed to be understood, its customs, etc. I married Sharon in 1985 in Vancouver, Canada. I have 5 children - 3 girls, 2 boys....ages 27-33. All were homeschooled. 3 are happily married. I have six grandchildren. I have taught and studied the Word of God in informal gatherings in England, Scotland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Canada, Alaska, Nevada and all over the United States. In 2006 I became aware of God calling me into the revelation of the glorified Christ within, and I have been involved in making that revelation known since then. I recently moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas, after living in Fitchburg, Wisconsin (suburb of Madison) since 1990.. If you're ever in the area, please look me up. I am a retired house painter, and God is providing for my wife and I abundantly! I am meek to the instruction of God...which often occurs while another person is speaking! So don't be afraid to comment on any of these studies. Because my heart is open to my master teacher, Jesus Christ!

I really love the statement that God is not a Christian. So true. It shows the widespread love that God has for all people, not just those who go to Christian churches. It really puts the focus on who Christ is and what his purpose is.

Hi Steve. I’ve been so incredibly busy with school..(sigh) but motivated…It’s crunch time again. I had a thought about this post here. What if Christianity is just a slice of God. Like a slice of bread from the bread loaf. That is who Christ is, a chip off the old block, hey? That would make God the inventor of Christianity which would make him the ultimate Christian. Whoever has seen me has seen the Father ~John 14:9 God is everything that is good. Isn’t Christianity good? 😉 Love you brother, Keep up the good work 😉

    Love you Brother,
Praying for you all and myself 😉

Of course the statement that God is not a Christian is meant to provoke the reader to thoughtfulness. Because any statement can be understood in any number of ways. That is why there are so many denominations. So to the degree Christianity is God manifested…..then God is Christianity. But there is so so so so much in Christianity that is NOT God. And that is the point of making that statement. As to your statement/question, “Isn’t Christianity good?”, I will answer it the way Jesus answered those who called him good. “There is none good but God.”
