Learning to Recognize the Voice of God

.

The voice of God can sound a lot like your own thoughts, except they are filled with the life of God.  In addition, the voice of God has certain attributes and characteristics which are uniquely different from your own thoughts.

You know it’s God speaking to you when:

Hearing the voice of God results in you “getting it.”

Romans 10:17a  So then faith comes by hearing…….

Of the 5 Greek words translated to hear in the New Testament, the word used here is akouo, meaning to give ear, listen; to learn by hearing, to be informed.  Rather than just hearing a sound, it indicates something has been learned.  So faith comes when something is learned by hearing.  But by hearing what?

Romans 10:17b   ……and hearing by the word (rema) of God.

Hearing the voice of God results in more faith, and with it, more joy and peace.

Here, the word for word is not logos, as is so often thought of when seeing the term  “the word of God.”  Rather, it is the Greek word rema.  Now logos indicates that which a person or thing communicates or expresses of itself.  But rema is where logos makes a personal impression on someone, resulting in successful communication, often in response to a question or a need.  So a rema of God often takes the form of an answer or a response, a command or a directive. an explanation or a lesson.  Rema is where the logos of God connects personally with you.

Hearing the voice of God will never, ever result in confusion, worry or fear.

Romans 15:13  Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Hearing the voice of God results in hope.

Hope is not wishing or even necessarily desiring.  Hope is an earnest expectation of a coming good, which cannot yet be completely seen and/or understood.

Ephesians 1:18a  The eyes of your understanding (kardia – heart) being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling….

Hearing the voice of God will never leave you guessing and wondering.

Ephesians 1:18b  ….and what is the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints.

The voice of God carries with it the nature and qualities of God.

James 3:17   But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

Pure – no hidden agenda, is up front and honest
Peaceable – causes calm confidence within
Easy to be entreated – is not a bully, is non-threatening
Full of mercy – always hopeful, never harshly condemning and judgmental of people
Full of good fruits – gets good results
Without partiality – doesn’t play favorites, because truth is its favorite
Without hypocrisy – never just goes through the motions, never puts on a mask

The voice of God never referees fleshly conflict.

James 3:14, 15   But if you have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.  This wisdom descends not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.

The voice of God is always directing our hearts toward Christ, and never toward our own abilities, unless those abilities are the abilities of Christ within.

Ephesians 1:17   That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge (epignosis – intimate, thorough knowing) of him (Christ).

The voice of God empowers us.

Ephesians 1:19a  And what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe (on Christ)….

The voice of God brings understanding of the deep spiritual things of God.

I Corinthians 2:9, 10  But as it is written, Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither has entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for them who love Him.  But God has revealed them unto us by His spirit; for the spirit searches all things, yeah, the deep things of God.

The voice of God establishes the presence of God and His will in our hearts.

Hebrews 10:16, 17  This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord; I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

The voice of God cannot condemn, cannot and will never focus on or point out our faults, sins and failings, except it be in the light of victory over them.

Romans 8:33, 34  Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect?  God, who justifies?  Who is he that condemns?  Christ, who died, yeah,  rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us?

The voice of God establishes the identity of Christ in our hearts, and in so doing, empowers us to walk in the fullness of His love.

Ephesians 3:16-19  That He would give you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might by His spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passes knowing, that you might be filled with all the fullness of God.

Be assured in your hearts that God will never speak to you so that you are left in doubt.  If you are in doubt, it is because God has not spoken to you.   If you are plagued by your thoughts, then they absolutely cannot be from God, but must be, rather, from Satan.

John 10:10  The thief comes not but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.  I am come that they (who believe Jesus) might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

The voice of God brings eternal life.

About stevehartlaub@gmail.com

I'm a 70 year old spiritual adventurer in life, but I don't really get along with organized religion. I find it too passive, too worldly, too conforming, too powerless ... though I know many wonderful believers involved in it. I have been a seeker of Jesus Christ since 1974 in Ketchikan, Alaska. Very early into my spiritual journey, I came to the realization that I wouldn't be able to last long in this new Godly relationship without becoming able to understand the Bible. God supplied that need, and shortly thereafter I became interested in Biblical research ... Greek, word studies, HOW the Bible is designed to be understood, its customs, etc. I married Sharon in 1985 in Vancouver, Canada. I have 5 children - 3 girls, 2 boys....ages 27-33. All were homeschooled. 3 are happily married. I have six grandchildren. I have taught and studied the Word of God in informal gatherings in England, Scotland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Canada, Alaska, Nevada and all over the United States. In 2006 I became aware of God calling me into the revelation of the glorified Christ within, and I have been involved in making that revelation known since then. I recently moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas, after living in Fitchburg, Wisconsin (suburb of Madison) since 1990.. If you're ever in the area, please look me up. I am a retired house painter, and God is providing for my wife and I abundantly! I am meek to the instruction of God...which often occurs while another person is speaking! So don't be afraid to comment on any of these studies. Because my heart is open to my master teacher, Jesus Christ!
